Meet Our Volunteers

Meet Colin

Curiosity led experienced CPA Accountant Colin Mott to register as a volunteer at Volunteering Gold Coast, "I used to drive past the office on my way to the airport and I always wondered what kind of work Volunteering Gold Coast were involved in," he said. "I had recently moved to the Gold Coast from Melbourne and was looking for a role that would make use of my accounting experience... the rest is history."

Colin has 40 years of general accounting experience in the health, hospitality and transport industries. At Volunteering Gold Coast, Colin assists with the day-to-day reporting and budgets "I really enjoy working with a bunch of lovely people donating their time for a good cause. It's inspiring to see so many people working together to help vulnerable and elderly people." he said.

Colin advises other people considering volunteer roles to "use your experience as best you can, whether that is helping in the marketing department or as a volunteer driver.  You will gain valuable work experience and contacts as well as a sense of satisfaction in helping the community."

Meet Bijou & Mary

Bijou along with his owner Mary, are keen volunteers for 'Story Dogs Gold Coast'.

Established in 2009, the program is founded on the belief that reading should be a fun experience; and its ultimate goal is to help children become confident, lifelong readers. 'Story Dog Volunteers' and their precious pooches, visit local primary schools to spend their time reading with (mostly) year 2 students.

Mary believes "Children who struggle with reading are often inhibited when trying to improve their skills with adults, but when you add a Dog to the mix, something magic occurs. Dogs are non-judgemental and their loving nature allows children to relax and have some fun."

The program is proving to be a success with Mary noticing a vast improvement in the children's literacy skills, focus and confidence.

Story Dogs are helping more than 500 children each week, across 51 schools throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.

Meet Richard

Richard Forbes is a first-time volunteer, dedicating his Business Development and Marketing Communications talents to raise funds for Volunteering Gold Coast. His former roles include Senior Social Media Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister and the Global Head of Marketing for the largest private education company in the world.

Richard was inspired to join Volunteering Gold Coast after meeting CEO Richard Patterson. "I was inspired by Richard's passion for helping other non-profit organisations achieve great outcomes in the community. His pride and joy in the success of Volunteering Gold Coast really shines through and motivated me to find the same sort of satisfaction by volunteering. I enjoy coming to work every day and knowing that the end result of all my hard work is helping people in need."

Richard's advice to others considering volunteering is, "No matter how busy you are, I believe everybody should make the time to volunteer. You will achieve a deep sense of fulfillment and belonging by giving back to the community."

Meet Ann-Marie

Trained in Hollywood, professional make-up artist Ann-Marie McNamara has worked in Film and Television, Fashion and Retail. No stranger to volunteering, Ms McNamara has previously donated her time, working two years in the Adelaide Burnside Hospital Café. When moving to the Gold Coast, Ms McNamara decided to find a volunteer position to suit her experience and time "I am fairly new to the Gold Coast so volunteering was an opportunity to meet new people and help the community," she said. "I genuinely enjoy helping people and feel part of my new community, it gives me a chance to contribute in a small way."

Ms McNamara registered her interest with Volunteering Gold Coast to volunteer as a Shop Assistant at Memento. "In my role I sort through the generous donations and select clothes that are suitable for sale, tag and price items plus store merchandising," she said.

Memento is a boutique charity store on the Gold Coast Highway. All proceeds from sales allow community organisations to deliver much needed services to the Gold Coast, including volunteer management, education and training and community transport services.
