Looking for a change of scene inspired John Flaherty to donate his time as a volunteer driver with Volunteering Gold Coast Transport Services.
“I worked in the hospitality industry for 40 years. I wanted to volunteer as it was a good chance to do something different for a change and an opportunity to give back to the community,” he explained.
“I’ve been a driver with Volunteering Gold Coast Transport Services for 12 months.”
Volunteering Gold Coast Transport Services offers a fleet of branded cars and buses that provide community transport solutions for people with a disability and the elderly, assisting clients to attend medical appointments, social visits and shopping trips. Relying heavily on a volunteer workforce, Volunteering Gold Coast Transport Services had a role available as a driver, and John quickly became an integral part of the team.
For John, the value he offers to the community is returned in the personal satisfaction he receives from his role and he encourages others considering volunteering to take the next step.
“Go for it, it is very rewarding to assist people by donating your time. Most people are very grateful for the service and tell you so nearly every day,” he said.
“I volunteer because I love to help others. My role is not only about driving people to and from appointments but also talking and listening to our clients, they share the most incredible stories about their lives with you.”
Volunteering Gold Coast is urgently seeking volunteer drivers to transport eligible clients around the Coast in its fleet of modern, branded cars and buses. Full training is provided. A current, clean driver’s licence is required.
