Surfers Paradise Surf Living Saving Club (SP SLSC) and Volunteering Gold Coast have partnered to ensure Gold Coast’s most iconic beach is accessible to everybody for the upcoming 2019/2020 season, by providing beach wheelchairs, accessible beach Mobi Mat, a mobile hoist and a team of volunteers to implement the project.
To kick off the Accessible Beaches Project, Mobi Mats will be rolled out onto the soft sand at Surfers Paradise Beach. These mats are long, sturdy and securely pegged into the sand, creating a smooth surface for people that are mobility impaired, having difficulty walking or with a pram. The mat provides easy access to the water’s edge. A mobile hoist will also be on hand to assist if required.
“The Accessible Beaches Project has been a dream come true for the Surfers Paradise SLSC. We were lucky enough to receive the beach mats some time ago, but have been unable to use them due to a lack of resources. Now, in collaboration with Volunteering Gold Coast, we are able to not only fulfill our dream of making everything accessible for everybody, we can also make the world of difference to many people who have not been able to access the beach.” Said Surfers Paradise SLSC President Mr Trevor Hendy.
“Volunteering Gold Coast & International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPWD) are delighted this project has come to fruition. Working collaboratively with organisations that align with our values is fundamental. By optimising social impact through harnessing innovation and promoting inclusion, we have been able to ensure this iconic beach is accessible for everybody.” Said Mr Simon Nugus CEO Volunteering Gold Coast.
Volunteers are needed to ensure the project is sustainable. People can embrace the opportunity and give back to the local community, learn new skills, gain experience and make a huge difference to people’s lives. Volunteers will receive onsite training, a uniform, meals, a certificate and will be given honorary membership to SP SLSC.
To use the mobile hoist and other equipment booking times are essential. Bookings and volunteer opportunities can be accessed through www.volunteeringgc.org.au.
Volunteering Gold Coast also encourages everyone to join us in celebrating the launch of the Accessible Beaches Project on Saturday 5 October 2019. Everyone is welcome to come down to Surfers Paradise SLSC from 10am – 2pm for a sausage sizzle, some refreshments and watch the Mobi mats in action.
